My Name is Thabo Sifumba and I am a full time mentor at The Character Company.

The Character Company is a long term mentorship programme for young boys from age 5 who are growing up with absent fathers or with no positive role models in their lives and we are raising boys to be good men. I get to meet up with my boys once a week to talk about our five values, which are self discipline, respect, courage, honesty and kindness.  Not only do each one of the boys in my group know these values, they also know how to apply them and that is how we are making this country a better and safer place for all of us.  

I have done few camps with the boys and I’ve seen few boys being shy to talk or to express their feelings, that got me worried because there is this thing that boys don’t cry. Well I believe that they should as it helps them to express their feelings, I mean if you look in our country right now men are killing our moms and sisters that’s how they express their feelings through anger towards women and children.

We are living at a time where men are so broken and lost because they had no one to mentor them or had no one to talk to. So if we taking five year old boys and teach them the five values of the Character Company, we are doing something that will stop this high gender based violence. What breaks my heart is the people in high power who are not doing anything to help organisations like the Character Company in helping our sisters and mothers from dying because of broken men.
