Statistics Honours Campaign

My name is Safiya and I would like financial aid for my Honours degree in Mathematical Statistics at the University of the Witswatersrand. I have successfully completed a BSc in Actuarial Science and Mathematical Statistics from the University of the Witswatersrand. Despite the challenges that this degree has thrown at me, I was able to obtain 6 exemptions with the Actuarial Society of South Africa (ASSA). Such an achievement reflects that I am academically driven and always aim to ensure that my goals are met. If I do face failure, I always persevere and try my best to get back on top. Doing the honours course will deepen my understanding of the statistical field. I will develop important skills and knowledge that can be applied in the working environment. I will gain a better understanding of how to conduct research and be analytical. We have seen the importance of such skills during the Covid-19 pandemic where data analysts were required to predict Covid-19 trends. I hope to use these skills in a similar manner- one that can have a meaningful impact in society. I wish to learn how to research trends, analyse data and find relevant solutions to the problems that South Africa face. Another advantage of having an honours degree is that it makes me more employable as many employers look for candidates with an Honours degree. As much as I would like to complete my honours degree, my current financial situation does not allow me to. My parents can not afford to pay for my honours degree as my father is currently employed and my mother is currently a pensioner who receives a SASSA grant. If I do receive financial aid, I will be able to turn my full attention to my studies and make the most of such an opportunity. I understand that with the financial aid comes responsibility and I assure you I will do my best. I am committed to achieving a good standard of academic results.
