My name is Thabo Dithato student number DTHTHA002. I am a Law student at the University of Cape Town, currently in my second year of Bachelor of Laws (LP001). I’m confronted with the possibility of being financially excluded. It renders me unable to register for my penultimate year in 2024, with my res offer likely to be revoked due to outstanding debt that remains unsettled with the institution. I have unfortunately been unsuccessful in getting funding to settle my outstanding debt in the preceding year. Regrettably, NSFAS has already assisted me in the past with my undergraduate education. I currently owe the University R184,938.33 which is made of my tuition and residential accommodation.

According to the University’s fee policy, as published in the Student Fees Handbook students whose debt exceeds R1,000:
1. Will not receive their examination results
2. Will not be permitted to graduate
3. Will not receive an academic transcript
 4. Will not be permitted to re-register for the following year

I have recently successfully passed my 2023 year, however, the challenge that impedes my prospects of registering for my 2024 year remains the burgeoning debt which places me at a very much precarious position of possible financial exclusion and indentured servitude.

I possess a fervent passion for Legal education access and social justice. Competing my degree holds immense importance. It does not only promise me a better future as a child of an underclass background like many of us, but it positions me to fulfil my dream of contributing meaningfully to the society by providing legal education to people on the margins of our ordinary communities.

I am reaching out to you all with a humble request for any form of financial assistance you might be able to provide towards my studies. Your support will not only aid in my personal and academic development but will also contribute to the development of our society through social justice and making legal education accessible to everyone.

Your generosity will make a profound and meaningful impact on my educational journey, and I thank you in advance for your support and your benevolence.

Warm regards,
Thabo Dithato
