In the heart of the University of the Western Cape, a resilient spirit named Mishka has embarked on a transformative journey, determined to overcome life's most formidable challenges in pursuit of a dream that resonates with passion and purpose.

Mishka's journey began in 2018 when she first registered for her LLB course. However, the weight of personal struggles took a severe toll on her mental health, forcing her to temporarily relinquish her aspirations. Through strength and resilience, she sought professional help, carving a path towards healing. In 2021, she courageously returned to the academic arena, ready to reclaim her place in the world of law.

The year 2021 unfolded as a year of both triumph and tribulation. Tragedy struck hard in 2021 as she lost both her parents, leaving her without the familial support that many take for granted. As the pillars of her world crumbled, Mishka found herself standing alone, facing the harsh realities of life. Midway through her final exams (first semester), she contracted COVID-19, a formidable adversary that she faced with unwavering determination. Despite the loss and illness, she grappled with the challenges of settling her own fees for the year. She persevered and emerged victorious, showcasing a tenacity that would become the hallmark of her journey.

In 2022, Mishka applied for comprehensive funding, including funding for accommodation from the National Student Financial Aid (NSFAS), while her application was approved, the financial lifeline for her housing never materialized. Undeterred, she took on the burden of working to pay for her accommodation and sustenance, all while navigating the complexities of her studies. To compound her challenges, a second bout of COVID-19 in 2022 further tested her mettle.

Despite these adversities, Mishka managed to progress academically and in 2023, having secured funding approval once again. However, the journey was far from smooth. The bulk of her 2023 funding has yet to materialize, leaving her in a precarious financial situation, added to that she faces rejection for 2024 funding due to an administrative error falsely claiming she has exhausted four years of funding when she has only been funded for three.

Mishka's academic pursuits are not merely a quest for legal knowledge; they are a testament to her resilience, her refusal to be defined by circumstances beyond her control. The study of law is her chosen vessel for change, a means to advocate for justice and equality especially for women and children, in a world that desperately needs it.
