Tramway Football Club is a large community-based soccer club situated in Southfield, Diep River.

It is one of the oldest soccer clubs in South Africa with a long history of community service since 1923. The club is completely run by community volunteers and currently has 264 junior members. We provide a football home, with coaching and match participation, to children and teenagers from the age of 4 to 17 years old.

Our under-12 team has been invited to participate in the world youth cup, also known as the Gothia cup. The Gothia cup is the world’s largest international youth soccer tournament. It is hosted annually in Gothenburg, Sweden with 1700 teams from 80 countries participating. It is a unique tournament that is unrivalled globally in terms of its large international flavor. The Gothia cup is thus appropriately referred to as the world youth cup.It is a meeting place for the world’s youth, irrespective of religion, skin color or nationality, with soccer as the common denominator. In 2017, our under-12 team made their debut in this tournament and made the top 16 out of 173 teams. In 2019 our U12 and U17 participated, and the experience was phenomenal. Next year’s tournament will run from the 14th -20th July 2024.

Our vision at Tramway FC is to promote soccer as a vehicle to integrate our youth from diverse racial, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds. This is particularly important in the South African context with our objective of creating a society characterized by love, respect, tolerance and understanding. As our late former president Nelson Mandela famously said, “sport has the power to change the world” and is more powerful than the government in breaking down racial barriers”. We are thus extremely excited at the prospect of participating in an international event that shares and promotes our vision on a global scale.

The club informs you that Cian Hendricks has been chosen to represent our club at this prestigious event. He is a talented and a highly committed young man that excels on and off the soccer field. His participation represents a unique opportunity to participate on the global stage and challenge himself against some of the best football players in the world. In order for our team to participate at next year’s tournament, we are completely dependent on sponsorships, donations and fundraising to get our boys to Sweden.
