Get Likhanya to the Cheetahs Campaign

My name is Shirley Koaho, born and bred in Gqeberha. I became aware of the situation that the young Likhaya Mcalu finds himself in, where he has an opportunity to further his career in rugby by attending the prestigious Cheetahs Academy in the Free State, via an activist friend Mike Bukani.

Where I live, I see so many youngsters who were once shining stars in school sports end up alcoholics or worse, due to lack of funds for them to further their studies or to explore opportunities beyond their present environment. Our neighbourhood is littered with promising talent that never got the chance to challenge themselves or opportunities to grow beyond township club sports. Club sport on its own is problematic as youngsters are assimilated into a culture of drinking.

If we can raise the funds to pay for the deposit, and hopefully get further support to enable his mother to manage the balance, then we would have enabled not just Likhaya but his family. It took a lot for the entire family to raise R2000 for registration - imagine the impact of his mother carried the balance of the fees.

The funds would be used to pay for the required deposit to enable him to travel to the Free State and commence his studies on the 13th of February, so it is rather urgent.

About Likhaya Mcalu: Likhaya Mcalu, a young and talented rugby player, is on a remarkable journey. Since the tender age of six, he has been passionate about rugby, dedicating himself to the sport. His unwavering commitment has led to numerous victories, including several trophies and medals. Likhaya’s determination and skill have earned him the titles of Best Junior and Senior Rugby Player of the Year at his school.

The Cheetahs Academy Opportunity: Likhaya’s dream is to attend the Cheetahs Academy in the Free State. Established by the Toyota Cheetahs rugby team in January 2017, the academy is a hub for developing promising players. It focuses on position-specific training, individual growth, and immersing players in the Cheetahs’ distinctive style of play, coaching philosophies, and team culture. Specialist coaches from the senior team guide and mentor academy players, ensuring a seamless transition into senior rugby.

Financial Hurdles: Despite his talent, Likhaya faces financial constraints. His family cannot afford tours or away matches, hindering his progress. However, Likhaya’s resilience shines through—he continues to thrive, making the most of every opportunity.

Sponsorship Needed: We are seeking sponsorship to support Likhaya’s journey. The academy’s tuition fee is R80,000 per year, but Likhaya has been granted a 50% waiver. He is responsible for covering the kit cost of R7,000 and the registration fee of R2,000. His family has already raised the registration fee, paid in December. Now, Likhaya urgently needs a R15,000 deposit to secure his place at the academy.

Your Impact: With your support, Likhaya can achieve his dreams and contribute positively to the world of rugby. Your generosity will empower this young athlete, allowing him to pursue excellence and make a lasting impact. Join us in backing Likhaya Mcalu’s rugby journey!
