Walter Futcher Cataract Operation Campaign

Good day friends, family, and fellow community members.

My name is Walter Futcher, I am 39 years old. I am a husband and a father of two.

I have a severe case of a condition called Cataracts. I awoke one morning to blurry and milky vision, and my vision has quickly deteriorated since then. Now I am unable to drive, read or write and this has resulted in me losing my job in January 2022. Currently, my wife is the only one working and supporting our family of four.

Without medical aid support, which we could no longer afford, I cannot undergo the damaged lens removal surgery and the implantation of artificial lenses. I desperately require this surgery, or I will face permanent blindness.

We did try to go the Government Hospital route, but due to an awfully long waiting list, I was given a possible procedure date of 18 April 2025. Unfortunately, I do not have the luxury of time on my side as I only have 6% vision in my left eye and 0% in my right.

If we wait until the possible procedure date given by the government hospital, I run the risk of losing the limited sight I have completely and being beyond help. It will also mean another two years of not being able to work and support my family.

We’ve spoken to a few doctors and to privately have this operation performed it would cost R30 000 per eye, which means we need R60 000 in total for me to regain my sight in both eyes.

The success rate of this procedure is magnificent and life changing.
