Making Waves for Teen Moms Campaign
In March 2024, I'll be embarking on the challenging Robben Island Freedom Swim in Cape Town, South Africa. This iconic cold water swim takes place from Robben Island to mainland Blouberg over 7.4km. This swim isn't just about conquering waves; it's about making waves of change for young mothers in need.
As a dedicated childbirth companion, doula and advocate for maternal and reproductive rights, I am using this swim as a platform to raise funds for programmes that support teenage mothers. Teenage pregnancy is a significant crisis in South Africa, driven by many social and economic challenges like limited access to comprehensive sex education and insufficient reproductive healthcare. The consequences include disrupted education, increased vulnerability to poverty, and heightened health risks for both the teenage mothers and their children, highlighting the urgent need for comprehensive intervention and support programs.
Funds raised from this campaign will go directly towards two remarkable organisations at the forefront of supporting and empowering young teenage mothers in Cape Town, South Africa. Donations will support young mothers through antenatal classes, mother-baby essentials, psychosocial support, physical support during birth, and postnatal follow-ups so mothers and babies can thrive.
The Zoe Project believes that healthy, educated, and empowered women can support healthy babies. Operating from Retreat MoU and clinic for the past 21 years, they have expanded their services to Mowbray Maternity Hospital, Hanover Park, Gugulethu and Mitchell’s Plain Obstetric Units. A team of passionate doulas, counsellors, educators and nursery volunteers provide women with options concerning their health and their future. Working closely with health and social services, they ensure women (and young mothers in particular) feel loved and heard.
Birth & Beyond is an NPO based in Redhill, Simonstown, dedicated to supporting young moms, first-time moms, pregnant women and young babies on their journey into motherhood. Their mission is to provide a nurturing and empowering environment, offering a wide range of services, resources, and community connections to ensure that every mother feels supported and confident in her role.
