In April 2018, I will take on a very big challenge in my life: A journey to Everest base camp! This will be my very first hike on this scale and it’s all in aid of Avela Foundation.
Together with my 14 team members, we hope to raise the much needed funds to help refurbish the Kimberley Hospital burn ward in the Northern Cape and also help launch Avela's Umatter support network, a psychological support network for burn survivors and their families.
The physical pain of a burn is horrific, but the worry, fear, and emotional pain it causes to survivors and their families can be just as difficult. Emotional support is crucial for recovery. I should know, I’ve been there myself.
At the age of three years old, I was a victim of gross Human Rights violation when my family home was petrol bombed by local students because my father was an Afrikaans teacher.
I sustained 75% burn wounds and also lost my younger sister, Grace in the fire that changed my life forever.
I was once too afraid to leave the house because I was scared of what others might think of me and now I’m wanting to climb Mount Everest to send a message to those hiding from the world, that there’s hope for them, hope they think doesn’t exist.
