On the morning of the 18th of April 2021, a vegetation fire broke out in Cape Town, South Africa. The blaze quickly spread towards the University of Cape Town (UCT), causing the evacuation of all students.

The fire caused damage to part of the UCT Library, residences, and upper campus.

Gift of the Givers are assisting those from UCT affected by the fire. They have prepared meals for students who needed to be evacuated. Gift of the Givers has been requested to assist with the managing of meal preparation and other essentials for the next week, whilst alternative accommodation is being sought.

Old Mutual has made a venue available to Gift of the Givers as a donation drop-off site, which will be available from 8 am on Monday morning. Items required are as follows:

Water, Powerade, Energade, juices, cool drinks, biscuits, energy bars, muffins, tea, coffee, long-life milk, sugar, rice, beans, oil, noodles, salt, spices, cereals, eggs, butter, jam, cheese and bread.
Soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, toilet rolls, sanitary pads, and hand sanitiser are essential personal hygiene requests.

Protective masks will be provided by Gift of the Givers. The requirement for blankets, linen, and towels is yet to be determined.

UPDATE:

Gift of the Givers thanks the South African public for their incredible generosity, compassion, and kindness towards those affected by the UCT Fire. We were overwhelmed with the surge in contributions today.

Having assessed our resources we are satisfied that what we have received will be sufficient for us to fulfill our commitment to the UCT Council to feed 4000 students three times daily over 6-7 days. Accordingly, we request the public to cease all contributions in cash and kind to Gift of the Givers with immediate effect.
