Personal message
My name is Xandri Barkhuizen and I am super excited to run the Two Oceans Half Marathon (21 km) on 14 April 2024 for a cause that is dear to my heart, namely children and adults with special needs.
Just a bit of background about myself, I am 16 years old and an only child. A day before my 10th birthday I was blessed with a very special baby ‘brother from another mother.’ He immediately crawled very deep into my heart and is the reason why I have a great love for people with special needs. Reitzie has the most beautiful heart and smile I have ever seen! 😊
Yes, there are some days he frustrates me, but I still love him to bits. Sometimes, he also gets frustrated with me because I do not always understand what he is trying to tell me. A few days ago, I had to rescue one of my running shoes from the dustbin that was lying right next to one of his dirty diapers. Luckily, I managed to find it before it landed in the garbage truck. (This was after I spend hours searching through the whole house for it, in desperation I headed outside late that night geared with a torch and gloves...)
To love someone unconditionally; is the most important and valuable life lesson he has taught me!
Reitz is my reason for choosing Woodside Special Care Centre in the Western Cape as the charity that I want to run the Two Oceans Half Marathon for. This centre is a residential home caring for 80 profoundly intellectually and physically disabled residents. My dream is to use this opportunity to create awareness for the centre and to try and raise funds to help make a difference in the lives of these children. It takes people with a special love and commitment to care for people with special needs and my hope is that this venture of mine will also motivate and assist these dedicated workers who take care of the residents day and night. Their hard work is appreciated and does not go unnoticed by the families and friends of the people they care for.
If my story resonates with you and you feel that this is a cause worth supporting, may I kindly ask for a donation for the Woodside Special Care Centre. In this way you can assist in helping the children and young adults who cannot help themselves.
As Sarah Palin said – Children with special needs inspire a special love! ❤
