Yes, we are doing it again.

Our group of friends are always up for a challenge. Last year, we did the Skyrun, and well, we want to do it again. The event was brutal… This year on the 18th – 20th of November 2022 we will take a “jog” unassisted, over the Witteberg Mountain Range.

Together with our incredible support base we were able to raise R63 920 last year for Rainbows and Smiles. This foundation is very close to our hearts. We have come to understand so much more about the work that they do and the difference they make in the lives of children with cancer.

Childhood cancer was introduced into our world when precious Mackenzie ‘MightyMack’ Friedman was diagnosed at the age of four months, with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). Those of you who followed Mack’s story will attest to how amazing this little girl is and how she has touched the lives of so many people.

Mack’s family have continued to support Rainbows and Smiles and because of Mack we are inspired to do the same by giving our Skyrun challenge meaning and a real purpose. With YOUR help we want to raise funds (we have set our eye on a R75 000 target), we want to raise awareness and we WILL honour every single child who has survived cancer or who has died because of this dread disease.

Rainbows and Smiles is a foundation dedicated to providing emotional, financial and social support to children diagnosed with cancer or a life-threatening disease, and their families and caregivers.

These are example of what they have been getting up to this year:

• Distribution of grocery vouchers.
• Blankets and heaters for the children’s wards.
• Providing basic clothing needs.
• Craft days at the hospitals.
• Assistance with transport for patients and parents to and from hospital by providing funds
• Assistance with medical expenses.
• Basic medical equipment, like ports, port needles and PPE.
• Assistance with basic sanitary ware like nappies, wipes and sanitary pads.
• Toys and activity sets delivered on a regular basis.
• Paediatric oncology ward upliftment (revamp of the “children and nurses” kitchen).
• Sponsorships of workshops where doctors and those involved in research, collaborate about paediatric oncology.
• Awareness talks at schools and companies.
• Palliative care collaboration with healthcare professionals.
• Contributing to funerals arranged for the precious children who have passed away.

 

Their principles include creating hope, smiles and relief for families and caregivers of children with cancer. Rainbows and Smiles is a public benefit organisation in terms of section 30 of the income tax act. They are a registered Voluntary Association.
