Solar energy plans to power Rhino care and rehabilitation facility

Everything you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind

of difference you want to make – James Goodall

The Rhino Orphanage needs power and New Southern Energy is rallying to help. Since 2015, this unique non-profit facility in Limpopo has been caring for the victims of the senseless scourge of rhino poaching that has been devastating South Africa’s rhino population. Now, the demand for their care and rehabilitation care has become so extensive, that they need to move to bigger premises.

After a mother rhino is poached, their calves, usually only found days later, are left hungry, thirsty, dehydrated, often injured and always completely traumatized and unable to care for themselves. The Rhino Orphanage was the first of its kind in the world to recognize the need to care for these vulnerable little creatures.

Their team of volunteers including vets, nurses, scientists and other great people with huge hearts work tirelessly to restore confidence and health to these wonderful animals. They work long days, long nights and have performed many a miracle. Over the years, dozens of rhino orphans have been nursed back to health and rehabilitated to the point that they were able to reintegrate into African bush life.

The Rhino Orphanage uses a tremendous amount of electricity for their milk fridges, veterinary machines, air conditioners, heat lamps, electric fencing, security systems, staff housing and more. When load-shedding strikes, it causes disruption to these already traumatized animals and poses a security risk. Building a solar system for this facility will enable them to continue their great work uninterrupted, and make them independent, without the worry caused by monthly bills and perpetual fundraising.

New Southern Energy has designed an off-grid system to generate solar power for the new premises of the Rhino Orphanage. An off-grid solar system is not connected to the electricity grid at all, and incorporates battery storage, additional to the solar panels and inverters, in order to meet the location’s electrical energy requirements. This system will go a long way in reducing the financial stress of the facility, but also put the Rhino Orphanage team in a position where they are empowered to do what they do best, saving the survivors of the poaching scourge, and nursing these creatures back to health.

The system that has been designed includes solar panels, inverters, combined battery and generator solution for uninterrupted power and advanced grid controller.
