Personal message
This is how the Lesotho đŸ‡±đŸ‡¸ Border two Border challenge was birthed, which is going to be run by Joel and his dad, Martin, during one week in December 2023 in Lesotho. Our two East Coast runners will start this epic physical challenge on the16th of December and will probably end by the 22nd of December.
This run is to raise as much funds to help relieve the enormous and desperate plight of 70 abandoned and orphaned babies and children currently in the care of The Kings Children's Home.
The Kings Children's Home receives no government subsidy or any financial state assistance, and, therefore rely heavily on inspiring young people like Joel and Martin to help them stay afloat.
This unique idea to use sport (in this case trail running for a greater cause than self) was birthed last year during Joel’s matric year at Selborne College in East London, when he decided to instead of having a big birthday celebration for his 18th birthday, he opted to run a distance of 100kms in the majestic Amatola mountains surrounding Hogsback.
With this first attempt, the father and son team, managed to raise
R55 000 for this home, which is very close to our family’s hearts, The Kings Childrens Home in Glen Eden, on the outskirts of East London.
So, this year Joel decided to up his game and chose an extremely tough and challenging adventure!
He is running with his dad across the mountain kingdom of Lesotho from one border, Maseru, the capital of Lesotho across this picturesque landlocked country of Lesotho to the other, Qacha’s Nek.
Their goal is to raise enough money to be able to cover the cost of caring for 70 abandoned babies and young children for a year.
The distance will be approximately 250 + kms and if all goes according to plan should take them about a week to complete.
With this challenge the team will make use of various social media platforms, as well as collaborating with a massive national sports fundraising platform called SPORT FOR LIVES, to drive this message home.
People, individuals, companies and corporates such as are encouraged to sponsor the runners any amount per kilometre run or any amount of your choice.
This whole event is completely self-funded and sadly the donations towards this drive is currently only sitting on approximately
Joel's aim is to try and get to as close to a R100 000 as possible, which is literally just a drop in the bucket compared to what it costs the home to survive each month!
Looking forward to the possibility of partnering with BACKABUDDY in order to spread our message much wider.
Kind Regards

Lesotho Border two Border Campaign

Hey supporters!
I want to share an incredible initiative led by this amazing19-year-old.
He's embarking on a challenging trail run across Lesotho in December 2023, aiming to become the youngest person to achieve this feat. Joel's motivation is to raise funds for The Kings Childrens Home, a facility caring for 70 abandoned and orphaned babies and children.
Last year, during his matric year, Joel ran 100kms in the Amatola mountains, raising R55,000 for the home. This year, he's taking on an even more ambitious challenge—running with me, his dad, across Lesotho to cover a distance of approximately 250+ kms in a week. The goal is to raise funds to support the home for a year.
We're using social media to amplify our message and collaborating with SPORT FOR LIVES, a national sports fundraising platform. Individuals and companies, are encouraged to sponsor us per kilometer or contribute any amount.
We're grateful for the support from Buffalo Toyota and Crossways Spar, but currently, we've only raised R6,000. Joel's target is R100,000, a modest amount compared to the home's monthly expenses.
We're exploring a partnership with BACKABUDDY to broaden our reach.
Any support will greatly help Joel and me reach our goal and aid The Kings Childrens Home in caring for these less fortunate children.
Kind Regards,
Fran Smith
