Personal message

The Sandton SPCA and “Adventure Dynamics International” (ADI) have teamed up for the “2017 SPCA Kilimanjaro Challenge” to lead a group of 20 climbers with a passion for animals to the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro from the  23rd September- 1st October 2017.

Their goal? To raise awareness around the unique role of SPCAs in the prevention of cruelty to animals & to raise funds of R5 895 000 for our work in a series of three expeditions beginning in 2017.

In 2017 we dust off our hiking boots once more to tackle a new goal: raising 1 million Rand for this year’s challenge. Each climber who joins our 2017 SPCA Kilimanjaro Challenge must raise a minimum of R10 000 in support of SPCAs in the Gauteng region. That is the equivalent of getting sponsors, friends or colleagues to sponsor R 1.75 for each meter climbed on the mountain (5895m).

Joining us on the climb this year are some celebrated local figures with decorated careers and incredible life goals. They are our “BIG 5”. There's Raymond "Birdman" Ramphele, famed bird conservationist in Soweto; Adriana Marais, a shortlisted candidate for the "Mars 1" programme, which seeks to relocate humans to Mars; Jo Munnik , the producer of “Inside Africa” on CNN; Meg Wilson,  the youngest “Special Unit Protection Manager “ and inspector with the NSPCA and finally “Tanzinite,” our beagle toy mascot whose father summited Kilimanjaro twice in the previous challenges and who hopes to follow in her dad’s footsteps and become the first beagle to summit Kili.

The Sandton SPCA prevents cruelty, alleviates the suffering of animals and promotes kindness as set out in the Five Freedoms.
  1. Freedom from hunger and thirst
  2. Freedom from pain, injury and disease
  3. Freedom from distress
  4. Freedom from discomfort
  5. Freedom to express behaviours that promote well-being
Animal abuse and neglect is something that can only be countered through education, pet care training and youth enrichment at a grass roots level.  Our Inspectorate and Education team work tirelessly to promote positive attitudes such as compassion, empathy and respect for all life through education and outreach programmes.
