Save Leopards through rescue efforts and the legal system

The Leopard & Predator Project was established by The Landmark Foundation in response to human-predator conflict on farms in South Africa.

Led by Bool Smuts, The Landmark Foundation has worked on studying leopard populations and mitigating farmer-leopard conflicts in the Eastern, Northern and Western Capes.

Mostly the work involves rescuing leopards from human wildlife conflicts. We have rescued 69 leopards from demise over the years. We have invariably also dealt with more than 50 deaths of leopards at the same time.

The project involves, direct actions to rescue every leopard, research of the species, education and extension efforts on farms, expanding leopard efforts, influencing market mechanisms that result in leopard persecution, and advocacy work. Dr Bool Smuts has become a foremost advocate for wildlife and have litigated for leopards and wildlife conservation, winning key victories in the Supreme Court of Appeal and the High Court.

Landmark Foundation is a conservation Non-Governmental Organisation based in South Africa that implements practical, economical, and ecological viable land use management approaches that ensure sustainable conservation goals at a large scale. The NGO has become an national leader in conservation and wildlife advcacy and recently won a seminal in the Supreme Court of Appeal for the righst to freedom of expression in wildlife conservation causes. Another battle was won holding government accountable in terms of leopard conservation. 

The NGO has a particular interest in leopard conservation and advocacy for wildlife.
