September is childhood cancer awareness month.

This is an annual international awareness month to raise support, funding and awareness of childhood cancers and the impact for sufferers and their families, South Africa.

Every year in South Africa, between 800 - 1000 children are diagnosed with cancer. Our socio-economic challenges, and generally poor level of awareness of the warning signs of childhood cancer, mean that many these children are diagnosed very late into their illness.

As a result, they face a difficult battle against their illness, and sadly, for many of our children, treatment just comes too late. Experts in South Africa estimate that around two-thirds of childhood cancers in our country remains unreported, which means that closer to 3000 children every year get cancer.

For the month of September Rainbows and Smiles supporters will be honouring the fight of childhood cancer survivors by running every day for 30 days. 

Each day we will run with admiration for these incredible children with their names written on our hands and their bravery edged into our hearts.

Rainbows and Smiles is not funded by government, and we rely on the generosity of our supporters and the passion of our volunteers to enable us to do the work we do.
