PROJECT COMPLETED. PLEASE SEE MY EPIC RIDE FOR CHOC PROJECT..
So what's this all about? As some of you already know, in August, yours truly will be taking his trusty mountain bike and his athletic frame on a four day off road adventure through Botswana, Zim and South Africa, with a couple of other likeminded people. Why would we want to cycle over 300km's over four days? Part of it is to be in the sheer magic of the African bush, let the soul and mind unwind and recover. There is also the hope that we get to sit round a camp fire, whilst in the background African bullfrogs sing their evening serenade whilst the distant roar of a lion sends shivers down the spine. The cracking of branches a sure sign that jumbo is having an early evening snack, and all of this is the soundtrack to sitting and collecting one's thoughts, with an ice cold frosty in hand. We will have been blessed to traverse some of the most majestic scenery this continent has to offer, and shared the road with the animals who call it home. The last day takes us to Mapungubwe, a place that proves that ‘civilisation’ was in Africa long before the ships with Dutch, English and Portuguese traders arrived to say they had ‘discovered’ Africa, a place that stakes a claim to us living in the cradle of humankind.
This event is called the Tour de Tuli, and apart from allowing us a rare opportunity to spend four days in the bush, there is another very important reason for doing this ride. It is the primary fund raising effort for an organisation called Children in the Wilderness.
All funds raised go to the organisation -I need to stress, that any funds that are raised here go 100% to the organisation in question; this is not an appeal to cover my costs. For donations over a R1000.00, you can get a tax certificate. What an incredible organisation it is. What appeals to me about the work they do is the fact that apart from the funds raised from entry fee's Wilderness safari's in effect 'close' some of their reserves for a few days during the year, allowing the staff to take the local children out on game drives and teach them about nature, conservation etc. These children live in the area’s surrounding these reserves and don't get to experience the reserves as 'visitors' and sometimes unfortunately only see the animals as pests who trundle through their crops etc. The one little chap was so chuffed to have seen lions as he thought they had feathers, and now he knows they don't!
It's a really worthwhile cause, if you want more detail you are welcome to drop me a line or visit their website. I will keep everyone updated via sms and will post some pic's after we get back
Any amount helps, thanks for your support.
Cheers
Roscoe
