Personal message

In November, our Tickey Pops was admitted to the hospital as he was not well.

After an emergency scan at Bedfordview life hospital, it was revealed that he had stage 4 cancer affecting his liver and rectum. Following two chemotherapy treatments, our pops faced additional complications, including a severe stomach pain over Christmas, leading to the discovery of an underlying kidney infection. After weeks of battling the infection, doctors decided to remove his right kidney.

Unfortunately, our pops has not yet recovered, spending nearly two months in the hospital with uncertain prospects in the fight against cancer.

Financially, the family is burdened with accumulating bills, relying solely on a hospital plan. Our mom/Nana is, torn between the desire to care for her husband and the need to sustain their business. The family earnestly appeals for assistance, hoping to provide our mom / nana the opportunity to spend invaluable time caring for him ~ Family

Ronald “Tickey” Carr, former professional jockey and one of South African Horseracing’s great characters, was diagnosed with Stage 4 Cancer in October of last year.

Tickey rode more than 500 winners during his career, his two major victories coming aboard Goldwater in the Clairwood Winter Handicap and on Larne in the 1983 Revlon Charlies at Gosforth Park. He never lost his love for racing and was often seen at the track and the various sales around the country and as a keen golfer, was for many years a loyal supporter of the annual Racing Masters.

Tickey’s condition deteriorated quite rapidly after the initial diagnosis and for the past couple of months has been hospitalised at Linksfield, receiving treatment for both his Cancer and other complications. He is due to go home some time this week and will need the services of a nurse/caregiver, but funds are now at a premium, having exhausted his medical benefits and personal savings.

Your assistance in this regard would be very much appreciated.

In November, my dear Tickey Pops fell ill and was hospitalized.

After tests, doctors found stage 4 cancer affecting his liver and rectum. Despite two rounds of chemo, he faced complications, including a kidney infection requiring surgery. He's been in the hospital for nearly two months now, still fighting.

Financially, it's tough. We rely on a hospital plan, and bills keep piling up. Mom/Nana struggles to balance caring for Pops and running the family business.

Tickey, a former jockey, loved racing. He won over 500 races, cherishing moments on the track and golf course. Now, he needs help. Medical expenses drained his savings.

Any donation would mean the world to us.

Thank you from our racing family.
