My name is Priscilia Sommie Chukwueloka and I am currently 20 years of age , turning 21 on the 14th of March 2024. I am doing my third and final year at the University of Pretoria studying BCom Financial Science.
I am raising funds to help me pay for my tuition (R43456) as well as accommodation fees (R66544).
My mother is a single parent , to my brother and I, and has been unemployed since February 2021 , unfortunately she has not been able to find a job since. She was able to take me through my first year (BCom extended programme) and I was then funded by Nsfas in 2022 and 2023. In May of 2023 I was erroneously defunded stating that my mother earns more than the threshold. I spent months constantly in communication with the consultants and was constantly given the run around with some saying they can see the proof of unemployment documents/retrenchment documents and some saying they can not see that the documents were uploaded until I was eventually rejected again.
My Aunt who earns +/- R7000 a month as hard as it was helped to try pay off my accommodation fees and together with my mentor would try and help me buy the groceries and toiletries needed. At the end of 2023 , I was still left with accommodation debt which caused me to sign an AOD of which my aunt is currently still trying to make monthly payments to pay the debt off. In terms of my tuition , I managed to secure an internal bursary that came through the university that paid off all my fees.
It is important that I raise the funds for my tuition so that at the end of this year I can be able to graduate and hopefully secure a job. The importance of raising funds for accommodation is essential as funds to travel daily to Pretoria are not available and funds to be able to browse the internet , download work etc are not available as data to do so is very expensive.
In the near future I aspire to obtain membership to SAICA/SAIPA so that together with this financial assistance I can attempt to better my future by becoming and breaking the status quo of being a prominent woman who leads in my field of study. I want to change the status quo of women in the auditing and accounting field , to be able to inspire young women and girls that no matter your background nor skin colour , it is very possible to penetrate the field , rise to the top and live your dream. It would mean so much to my family and I to be able to receive this life changing opportunity as it would allow my mother to focus more on the needs of my 7 year old brother , such as schooling etc and evidently would be a huge weight off of her shoulders regarding my schooling and the essentials I need in life. I believe me finishing this degree can contribute to attaining a better society, change my life as well as my families life and I hope that one day when I achieve my goal , I am able to repay my mother for all the good she has done in both my life and my brothers life
