Personal message

It was discovered quite late that my dad has ALS or "Lou Gehrig's disease." It also recently came to light that my parents' medical aid does not cover ALS as a chronic disease; only if they are on the top-tier plans are they covered. The picture was taken two days ago, and as of the writing of this message, he has been admitted to the hospital. The medical aid is refusing him an oxygen tank and respirator because the one reading they took of his oxygen levels was normal according to the machine, yet he is constantly gasping for air due to his body not having enough muscle mass to breathe in.

Alongside this, the cost of the medication is astronomical for two retirees to cover, and the eventual need for a caregiver will further hurt them financially. They are unable to cover all these costs to help my dad, and I fear that without your help, it's going to be a long and hard struggle.

What the funds will be used for:

  • Rental and/or purchase of an oxygen tank.
  • The eventual need for a wheelchair.
  • Communication aids like a Grid3 tablet and camera to help with communication.
  • Operation to include a feeding tube.
  • Funds for a caregiver.

A family recently discovered their father has ALS, a condition not covered by their medical aid unless on top-tier plans. The father's condition necessitates expensive medication and medical equipment like an oxygen tank and respirator, not provided by their insurance. The family seeks financial assistance for medical expenses including oxygen tank rental/purchase, a wheelchair, communication aids, a feeding tube operation, and funds for a caregiver, as they cannot afford these costs on their own.
