PETS is a registered public benefit organisation which was founded in Cape Town by Anoux Massey in 2007. Our Johannesburg branch started in 2010 and focuses on the underprivileged townships located South of Johannesburg (Walkerville, Orange farm, Thulamtwane etc). We are based in Fourways but travel to the townships twice a week. Because these townships are located so far away, there are hardly any veterinary services or resources available to the community, which is why we have chosen to focus on these areas.

Our main aim is to help improve the conditions for animals in the townships by educating the public, providing medical care and sterilization programs and providing adequate shelter, food and other necessities for as many animals as we can. Education is key to us as we feel it necessary to empower the community to better care for their animals. We also assist in re-homing any unwanted, abused or abandoned pets that come into our care from these areas. The dogs/cats go into foster homes where they can be rehabilitated and re-homed. This is done responsibily with homechecks, sterilisation and microchipping before they are rehomed. We make sure that the animals we rescue will be in the best hands. . 

Every week we bring in at least 4 animals from the township for medical treatment and a further 8 to be sterilised at our vet in Radiokop. Sterilisation is compulsory when we provide medical treatment for an animal. When we take them home we give them a kennel if they dont already have one and make sure their environment is safe for them to return to. They are also vaccinated, dewormed and deflead before returning home. At any given time our vet bill is around R40 000. We employ volunteers in the community to build kennels which our supporters fund that go to the dogs that we sterilise. This helps encourage dog/cat sterilisation in the township as well as providing employment for the locals.

We do not receive any regular corporate funding and the public donations we receive are not nearly enough to cover the costs of all the work we would wish to accomplish. It is also important to note that no PETS-member receives profits or benefits from the work we do, all proceeds go towards empowering pets in townships and poor communities. All vehicles, petrol, cell phone airtime and any other personal resources are funded by ourselves.

This Mandela Day, we are asking our supporters for immediate assistance in settling our main outstanding vet account which is sitting at R74 392.

Having such a large, outstanding account greatly hampers the work we do as we can no longer continue to provide sterilizations or veterinary treatment to any animal until out outsanding accounts are fully paid.

We need just 1110 supporters to make a donation of JUST R67 each in honour of Mandela Day which will settle our account. All money raised gets paid directly into our vet account. Please consider supporting our Mandela Day initiative.
