For OneVoice South Africa (OVSA), young people are at the heart of our partnerships – and like many of our colleagues and peers, we are devasted to see how the Coronavirus is impacting around the world, and now on our country and loved ones. What is clear, is that we need to stand together in friendship, in love, and in faith. This means adapting as quickly as possible and working together to slow the spread of COVID-19. Our team at OVSA is doing their part to help keep themselves and the communities they support safe and healthy, but we can’t do this without YOU, and supporting our young people on their continued development and education, has never been more important than right now. Being a young person in South Africa can’t always be easy.

Growing up is a journey often burdened with the effects of a seemingly unrelenting AIDS epidemic and educational systems are still recovering from the country’s previous inequalities, not to mention issues of poverty, unemployment, and now Covid-19. Nonetheless, we are proud when we see how brave and inspiring young South Africans are. They bring boundless energy, passion, and fresh ideas to the table, and their commitment is critical to building a healthy tomorrow.

Every child deserves to have a quality education, but, unfortunately, with the additional challenges we are now facing - as in all aspects of life, there are unforeseen circumstances that occur and we just have to go with it and not dwell, instead, we can focus on the positives and try even harder to support each and every child and ensure that they have the opportunity to receive the educational support they need.

As an NGO, OVSA is now requesting your support to raise R600, 000 to help us continue to provide prevention and development education in 16 high schools across eThekwini, iLembe, and King Cetshwayo districts in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Activities are in support of the national Life Orientation curriculum themes ‘Development of Self’ and ‘World of Work’ and focus on supporting young people on addressing the many critical health and lifestyle issues they face, including HIV/AIDS, Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, Gender roles, values, WASH, menstruation management and Human Rights. OVSA has a special focus on the development of young girls, and serves approximately 6000 young people per annum.

OneVoice South Africa (OVSA) is a vibrant and unique non-governmental organization, which uses innovative and creative ways of actively engaging young people on critical health and lifestyle issues – including HIV and TB prevention. Our programme is appealing to young people because it provides them with a platform to discuss and address HIV and AIDS, TB, life and livelihood skills, sexual and reproductive health and rights, gender, hygiene practices, good citizenship, and human rights issues.

Our target audience is young people, 13-25 years. We believe it is crucial to target these young people as they transition from childhood, through adolescence, and into adulthood; a time of risk, while also offering a great opportunity for change. We are passionate about partnering with young people from diverse cultural backgrounds, different geographical areas, and from various settings, including in education and the community, for the following reasons:

Most young people become sexually active between 13-24;
Most new infections occur between the ages of 15-24, and mainly among women;
Young people’s minds are more receptive to creative and inclusive messaging, and
Young people are our future role models and leaders.

OVSA is currently implementing its Schools Programme and associated projects through a partnership with Grade 8, 9, 10, and 11 learners, in 22 schools across KwaZulu-Natal. The Schools Programme includes the Life Skills Project (Grade 8), the Life Skills Project (Grade 10), the Enterprise Project focussing on careers and entrepreneurship development with Grade 9 and 11 learners, and the Early Detection of TB Project (Grade 10).
