I am a 23 year old girl from South Africa working abroad in the United States. Recently (16/12/2023) my beloved stepfather passed away. I felt an urgent need to return to South Africa to support my family, my mother and my two younger brothers, and to attend the funeral.I had maxed out my credit card to pay for my flight tickets and to pay for my Visa. The ticket prices were sky high since it’s holiday/Christmas time. I, of course, am also not getting paid for the few weeks that I am back in South Africa, but I still have my expenses in the States.
I pinched my eyes close and paid for my ticket with the idea in mind that there will always be money to be made, but the time that we have with each other is only borrowed, and is something that we will never get back.
