Meet Mikaela:
Mikaela, a remarkable individual, has recently been diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), a challenging battle against cancer that has shaken her world and that of her loved ones to its core.
Her journey through life has been anything but easy. From a young age, Mikaela faced the challenges of her parents' separation. Her father, an underwater welder, spent months away at a time, and her mother struggled with mental health issues, leaving Mikaela in the care of her grandmother for much of her childhood. This early responsibility forced her to mature quickly, missing out on the simple joys of childhood. Despite these hardships, Mikaela's determination and resilience shone through.
Mikaela's academic achievements reflect her unwavering commitment to success. Graduating in the top 15 of her high school class, she went on to earn her first degree in applied linguistics and followed it with honors, both with distinction. Even the devastating loss of her father to Covid-19, a pillar of strength in her life, did not deter her. She persevered and earned her Masters, dedicating her work to increasing the literacy rate in South Africa.
Mikaela's passion extends beyond academics. As a staunch advocate for animal rights, she has been a committed vegan for nearly a decade. Her mission is clear – to make the world a better place for all living things. Currently a junior lecturer at UNISA, Mikaela is renowned for her exceptional work ethic. Colleagues describe her as the most hardworking and dedicated person in the institution. Despite a demanding workload, she always finds time for one-on-one sessions with her students, excelling in her role.
At just 26 years old, Mikaela's future was filled with promise. She was poised to apply for her PhD, received a permanent senior lecturer position in a South African academic institution, and was set to receive an emerging scholar award in Italy. However, her dreams are now uncertain due to her recent medical condition.
In the face of adversity, Mikaela remains resolute in her fight against leukemia. Her family, friends, and partner stand beside her, offering unwavering support. However, the financial strain of her medical expenses and the inability to work during the extensive treatment period weigh heavily on her family.
