Personal message

After engaging with Mark's close friends and family, we decided to start this campaign. Mark Hawkins needs his community as he faces severe health challenges. We need to raise a significant amount of money to help him in the months ahead following the removal of his lower limb. The journey ahead will be mentally and physically challenging. He will require expert nursing and physio over an extended recovery period. Basic living costs will need to be taken care of while he adapts to his new normal. Mark will not be able to work anytime soon.

For those who don't know me, my name is Brenda Sakellarides (formerly Radloff). I have known Mark for over 30 years. Our close friendship was cemented by our shared passion for developing young artists. Mark is currently the Artistic Director of the Johannesburg Youth Ballet (JYB), and we are using the JYB to manage this fundraising. I cannot underestimate both his current and future needs. Mark has generously shared his creativity, talent, humour and heart with countless people across the globe. I believe that we all have a special place in our hearts reserved JUST for him that no one else will ever take or fill. It is stating the obvious to say that he is kind and goes to the ends of the earth for his friends. I believe we all recognise that it is now time for us to hold him and help him heal. Together, we can ensure he is afforded everything he needs to recover and to recover well so that he can continue to create, inspire and teach - sharing his unique Mark magic and joy with an ever-expanding audience.

For those who don't know Mark, he is a wildly gifted dance professional, choreographer, producer and director. He is also a loyal and loving friend. His professional career as a ballet dancer saw him grace stages internationally to acclaim. A former artistic director of Moving Into Dance and the NAPAC Dance Company, he also headed the groundbreaking Flying Fish Dance Company in Durban. Mark's work as a creative continues to make an impact. His recent work with Sibikwa Arts Centre has seen him delving into the heart of inclusivity in Dance, working with dancers with disabilities. This work is now a beautiful and significant mirror for the reality he faces in his own life. It is time to help our Mark. We can do it!
