My mission
I would like to invite you the opportunity of being a part of elevating me, Lethokuhle Gwala 3rd year WITS Fine Art student, a young African artist and i also go by the name Jerome. Help me get to the epicentre of the art world by helping out with paying off my accumulated historical debt and further study costs. As I am pursuing a career that will equip me with the necessary tools that will ensure i actualise my destiny.
Being raised in a financially disadvantaged household in Umlazi township that faces various hardships, I have always been motivated to rise above my circumstances. My grandmother, who has been my guiding light, has worked tirelessly to support my dreams, and I am determined to prove that her sacrifices were not in vain.
We all grew up listening to stories told by those older than us most of those stories inspired the lives we lead this very day. I too was inspired to pursue my career in film making and directing because of the plethora of realities I experienced and saw first hand, growing up in the township. What better place to showcase my talent and to sharpen my skill than at the prestigious WITS School of Arts. A place where the greats have graced and left their mark, in the international and African art space. I too have the same desire to change the world with my creativity and intellect, and i know i will, just maybe not in the way or timing i thought i would. But i know i am on the right track, I will succeed in my dream of combating African youth illiteracy through art a reality.
I believe that my journey as an art student is not solely about personal growth but also about becoming a creative force that can bring about positive change in my community. My creativity is an asset that I wish to harness for the betterment of society. I am determined to give back and uplift the very township I come from, despite its challenges.
My heart aches for my community, which grapples with socio-economic issues and dangerous environments. I dream of being a beacon of hope, inspiring others through my art and actions. These dreams will not remain distant aspirations.
I will, by fire or force, be involved in the rescuing of African religious and cultural traditions through conserving the skill of storytelling through multiple media. Be apart of a solution confidently, this is an opportunity for you to be apart of something bigger than individuals, bigger than me.
Love & light
Jerome
