Personal message

We are the very proud parents of Lara Strydom, a grade 12 scholar at Hermanus high school.

Last year Lara participated in the first round of the National Science Olympiad. She competed against some of the country's brightest students and made the short-list in the selection process to represent South Africa at the 35th International Biology Olympiad. The Olympiad will be held in Astana, Kazakhstan later this year.

Studying for the Olympiad during the December school holidays was no easy task. Many sacrifices had to be made, but true to her nature, Lara was adamant and stuck it out.

On the 15th of February 2024, Lara wrote the final selection test and was chosen as one of four students to represent South Africa. Life Sciences is Lara's favourite subject, so this achievement is a dream come true for her.

The South African team will leave on the 6th of July 2024, and return on the 15th of July 2024.

We are raising funds to help finance Lara's amazing achievement and would be grateful for any help we receive from friends and family.

The cost of the trip will be about R48 000 per student (depending on exchange rates and ticket prices). This estimate includes air tickets, registration, accommodation, meals and sight-seeing excursions.

Taking part in the International Biology Olympiad will be invaluable to Lara's future medical career, a goal which we are confident she will achieve. Interacting with students from around the world will challenge and stimulate her curiosity in the biosciences. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
