Hi, my name is Tracy, a single mother to a 26-year-old diagnosed with Frederick ataxia. Let's start at the beginning.
Growing up, he was a healthy, energetic youngster who played sports until he discovered cricket, his passion in which he excelled. At age 19, after a gym session, he noticed a stiff left arm, initially thought to be a pulled muscle. A month later, with no improvement, we visited the doctor.
To my shock, over the next few years, we underwent numerous tests, from blood tests to MRIs, cardio MRIs, and more. Fortunately, we got into Albert Luthuli Hospital, even without medical aid. The diagnoses ranged from scoliosis and Schermann's disease to cellabella ataxia, ultimately leading to Frederick ataxia, with no cure and a prognosis of ending up in a wheelchair, as explained by the neurologist. Despite having to give up all sports, he found solace in playing pool, joining BSA (Blackball South Africa) league in 2023, aiming for his Springbok colors.
He's been invited to trials in the disability section but needs a new walker, one with top brakes for independence around the pool table, as assistance is not allowed. The current walker isn't user-friendly for the game.
Besides the required black shoes and pants, I appeal to everyone to open their wallets, no matter how big or small, to support this youngster, as I cannot afford this on my own. Thank you.
