Personal message

I met Juan and Kelly 3 ½ (in 2010) years ago,and they very quickly crept into my heart! Juan, who was diagnosed with a Glycogen Storage Disease, a neuromuscular condition which affects every muscle in the  body. He was not expected to ever walk,in fact,his Paediatrician cried when he did.

Clearly hard work and dedication from the Du Plessis family has paid off,and today,we all have to speed up to keep up with Juan! Despite often being sick, he still is able to do many things that he was never expected to.

On top of supporting Juan, Kelly has worked tirelessly with other families affected to bring acceptance by medical aids and awareness to the cause, in the form or Rare Diseases South Africa.

On the 1 June, I will be running Comrades – the ultimate human race,to bring awareness to the Rare Diseases that affect so many families. 
I run this race for awareness and I run this race in honour of Juan. I run because Juan can.

Rare Diseases South Africa, formerly the Rare Disease Society of South Africa, was founded in 2013 by Kelly du Plessis. Founded out of personal need after the diagnosis of Kelly’ son, it quickly became evident that there was a lack of support and awareness on rare diseases in South Africa.
