Every day I log on to Facebook and I see messages from friends and family asking for prayers and support for someone they know who is suffering from or has been affected by Cancer.

I see requests to post things on my wall to say that I hate Cancer or asking me to “Like” this to support this or that fight against Cancer.  Well, this year I have decided that in addition to posting, praying and “Liking”, I am going to go a step further and actually get out and do something that will really make a difference in someone’s life.

On the 22nd April 2012, I will again be taking up the challenge of the IRONMAN South Africa Triathlon to raise funds for the Oncology Ward at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital in Cape Town.

The Children’s Hospital Trust fundraises for the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital and Paediatric Healthcare in the Western Cape. The hospital manages over 250,000 patient visits each year. These patients are from throughout South Africa and from countries beyond our borders and are predominately from poor and marginalized communities.

The Children’s Hospital Trust is a non-profit organization which relies entirely on the generosity of its donors to realize its aims and objectives. 100% of all donations made to the Children’s Hospital Trust go directly to the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital and not a single cent is spent on administration costs.

I want to raise money for this worthy cause but I also want to honour those who have been or are being affected by Cancer.  Not only those who have passed away but those who have fought and won or who are now fighting it.

I am asking that all of my Facebook friends sit down and come up with a list of names of everyone you know who has been affected by Cancer.  Then I ask that you make a donation $10.00 (Ten US Dollars) or R80.00 (Eighty South African Rand) for as many of these names as you can afford.  When you submit your donation, you will submit the names as well.  All of the names collected will be screen printed onto my race jersey and will as inspiration on race day.   Once the race is over, the jersey will be cleaned and framed and presented to the Red Cross War Memorial Hospital to be hung in a prominent place within the Oncology Ward to honour your friends and/or family members.

If you know me, you know I am a go big or go home kind of a guy so I am not talking about 15, 20, 50, 100 or even 500 names.  I want a minimum of 1,000 names to print on that jersey before I step onto Hobie Beach on the 22nd of April and I know that this is possible, but I need your help.  I need you to like my page, my blog and the page where you make donations, share them with all your friends and family and help me get the word out.

In addition to the donation in honour of Cancer victims, I am also willing to take up challenge donations by anyone wishing to push me to better my personal best IRONMAN time of 16 Hours, 10 Minutes and 2 Seconds which I established in 2009.  I would like to finish in less than 14 hours this year and could use all the help I can get to push me in this direction.

Corporate donations are also most welcome but due to restrictions on my race entry, I am unfortunately not allowed to show any corporate branding.

If you are not familiar with IRONMAN, the race requires participants to Swim 3.8km (2.4 Miles), Bike 180km (112 Miles) and Run 42.2 (26.2 Miles) and cover the complete distance of 226km (140.6 Miles) within a 17 hour time limit.

For more information please visit www.childrenshospitaltrust.org.za or www.facebook.com/childrenshospitaltrust  or contact them on 021 686 7860.

The Children's Hospital Trust

Charity Default Logo

A hospital dedicated entirely to children – especially children predominantly from impoverished communities throughout Africa – is critically important. So important, that it needs a champion to make sure that it’s able to keep doing the phenomenal work it does.

That champion is the Children’s Hospital Trust.
