From lazy to crazy,

Gemma strives for five!

I have been educating myself on the horrors of childhood cancer and the ability of a child to get treatment to have a chance at life. If children are our future, why are we not fighting harder for them?

 I have met with the team at Rainbows and Smiles, who are all directly impacted by the devastation of childhood cancer, I am amazed by their passion and dedication to this cause, and it made me realise I had to do something to help them. 

Their mission is that all children have the right to fight. All families facing childhood cancer should not have to worry about where their next meal will come from or how they will pay for supportive cancer medication.

A little about my journey to doing an Ironman 70.3: the dictionary defines a journey as an act of travelling from one place to another. My journey was normally from the couch to the fridge and back. Something had to change.

I have never been sporty, and embarking on this journey has pushed me beyond any comfort zone. Triathlon has challenged me mentally, emotionally, and physically. I found that by pushing my own boundaries, I could create personal bests. I realised that achieving results came from being uncomfortable. 

It has been challenging; I have cried at the track, ridden home in the rain even though it wasn’t raining, I have been in dark places unable to breathe, but I show up and push myself every day.

As the training intensified, my coach had a hard time keeping me calm; I thought about backing down a hundred times and was terrified that everything could go wrong.

I finally heard the words, “Welcome to the red carpet, Gemma Theron, in six hours and forty-eight minutes!” I had done it, and with tears of joy streaming down my face, I Gemma was an Ironman 70.3 athlete. The most unbelievable sense of accomplishment EVER.

So, what am I going to do, and how can you help? 

I am turning 50 year in August and have challenged myself to do 5 of these triathlons, one for each decade of my life, raising funds and awareness to support Rainbows and Smiles.
