Sustaining an acquired brain injury is a significant life disruption, for the individual as well as for their families and friends, with lifelong consequences.
Patients who have private health insurance have reasonably good access to in-patient acute rehabilitation. Once discharged from in-patient care, funding for ongoing therapy through health insurance is dramatically reduced.
Just a fraction of our population can afford private health insurance. Approximately 84% of South Africans rely on state run health services. Gauteng, a province with a population of 15,5 million people, has only 120 rehabilitation beds available - shared between a range of diagnoses. Out-patients services are strained, and community based support systems for ABI survivors are virtually non-existent.
The much needed ongoing community based support that ABI survivors require in the long term is provided by a handful of NGO’s.
Headway is one such organisation which steps into the breach to provide much needed support services to ABI survivors – regardless of who you are or when the injury occurred. No one gets turned away. No health insurance is required.
Due to various factors including, but not limited to, the absence of Lotto funding, the COVID pandemic, and the current economic climate, funding for Headway Gauteng programmes have been significantly curtailed.
Headway Gauteng is in urgent need of financial support in order to continue to run its support programmes in Gauteng, and hopefully expand its programme to areas where there is need.
Please consider donating, and spreading the campaign amongst anyone who shares a passion to see survivors of ABI given an opportunity for meaningful participation in post acute rehabilitation and support services.

Headway Gauteng (The Brain Injury Association)

Headway Gauteng is a registered charity organisation dedicated to offering various support programmes to survivors of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and their families.
The vast majority of our injured members have sustained a traumatic brain injury as a result of a motor vehicle accident, sporting accident or assault. We also assist survivors of acquired brian injuries such as stroke or tumour. These people have led a full life up until the brain injury, which has caused permanent changes to physical, cognitive, emotional and behavioural processes.
