Personal message

My name is Happy Muller. I hold a degree in BA in Law and have currently completed my 4th year of LLB at the University of Johannesburg.

I am a dedicated, tenacious, passionate, hardworking, and resilient young student who is facing a major obstacle in completing my final year of studies due to outstanding fees. I have a burning passion for my field of study and the past 4 years have proven this fact. This is precisely prevalent in the way I was able to resiliently manoeuvre through life' atrocities and still succeeded academically, this year.

When I ventured into the law field in the aforesaid institution, I was really excited by the blessing it was to not only have been enrolled in one of the now ranked "second best university in South Africa and on the African continent" but also helped me realize the sole dream I ever wanted to explore since tender age, that's being a lawyer. Law is an intellectually challenging, stimulating, and demanding course yet rewarding in ways that edify and enhance an individual to be more cognitively critical and analytical about complex legal issues. Premised on the fact that I come from an indigent family background, with a father who is late and a mother who is a pensioner and hardly makes ends meet, a career in law can be financially rewarding and will serve as a catalyst to financial emancipation or freedom for me and my family alike.

My former bursary retracted its funding because it does not fund two degrees and I cannot reiterate enough the plight, life without funding has left me in, the hardships and struggles I have endured subsequently. The one instance being the issue of accommodation which has exposed me to vulnerable and unpleasant positions/situations, especially as a young woman in a country with so much social ills. I have been robbed, and thus lost my gadgets (laptop & phone) which were both essential for my studies. To elucidate further, on the strain it was and still is to get through the respective semesters with my marks retained, following the outstanding fees. However, despite all the burdens I have endured, I evidently developed a strong distinct character of resilience, tenacity, poise, unwavering commitment to the set goals and objectives I have in this career. There’s been many attempts where I almost gave up, but I firmly stood the test of time and kept going amidst the struggles, because I had to remember the purpose for which I’m here for, my indigent mother back home, who has so much hope and profound belief in my dreams, goals, and achievements. Moreover, the tangible/visible hope and inspiration I am, to those coming after me not only from my family unit but also the community in its entirety and that’s where my inspiration stems from.

I have been actively involved in volunteer/intern work at our local court and have recently joined one of our local law firms which has been an incredible experience yet. I treasure the practical experience and knowledge these spaces have allowed me to gain, the way they help bridge the gap between the theoretical and practical aspects of the field, the ethical and conscious legal prowess cultivated in me, and the understanding for the fundamentals of law and how the justice system works, especially the interactions with people/clients. I therefore, aspire and endeavour setting up a legal clinic in my own community that will provide for low-cost legal services or my own practice which will focus on serving underserved, impoverished communities so to make justice accessible at their disposal.

It is thus for the above-mentioned reasons, to say the least, that I humbly implore each and everyone of you to contribute to helping me realize my dreams so I can effect change to not only my immediate family but also communities, precisely those marginalized. Your act of generosity will be of enormous impact as it will help lift this financial burden, hindering me from registering for my final year by January. No amount is too little, every cent counts, and certainly makes a big difference. Thank you and God bless you for your helping hand.
