Personal message

My name is Graham and I am an addict….in recovery. This does not define who I am but is a reminder of where I come from and where I can end up again. I was wondering what I would write for the campaign this year and among the thoughts that popped into my head is how amazingly blessed I am. This year I celebrated 13 years clean from drugs and alcohol, but I certainly did not do this on my own. I am surrounded by a universe of people who show me love and compassion, who are there for me, who inspire me and help me. With them I have gotten clean and found a new way of life, which has opened up so many new opportunities – I am blessed.
For the 3rd time, I will be doing the Cape Town Cycle Tour and I’ll be riding for the Recovery Foundation again. While I have had lots of love and support, there are many who don’t have that, this is where the Recovery foundation comes in. They help people at the bottom end of Society, the guys on the streets… they don’t have homes, jobs etc.  Most of them, if not all, have some sort of drug dependency issue. They take the individual off the streets, into a rehab centre to get clean and then we put them into long term reintegration programs (such as halfway houses etc.) and work on skills development, family reintegration services, basic coping skills, healthy living (eating healthy, physical activity usually through football, cycling or running).
They also use various events during the year to raise awareness and funds such as the 94.7, Cape Town Cycle Tour, The Recovery Film Festival, etc.
