Personal message
A pig farmer in the Western Cape has had a change of heart and has surrendered all 18 pigs to a sanctuary. Greyton Farm Animal Sanctuary is appealing for funding to support the adapting of an existing shelter into a suitable space for the four nursing sows, a now castrated boar and 12 piglets. We need help with vet costs to neuter the piglets when they are stronger and to provide premium feed, treatment and vaccinations. Funding will also support the farmer to transition to vegetable gardening and restore his income. Owing to the delicate nature of this operation, the pigs had to be removed quickly but their major needs still need to be met over the next five to six weeks.
If we can demonstrate that it is desirable and profitable for pig farmers to surrender their pigs and allow the sanctuary to help them to transition to a kinder way of farming, one without animals, then many more may follow, saving thousands of farm animals from suffering and evoking compassion and empathy in the farmer and the local community.
R28,000 will pay for the sterilisation of one boar and 12 male and female piglets. R4,000 will pay for the adapting of an existing shelter to allow separate spaces for each sow and her babies, and for the boar until he is no longer fertile (takes three weeks). R6,000 will buy premium feed and cover most of the treatment and vaccination costs of the pigs and piglets. R12,000 will part-fund the farmer's transition to vegetable farming. We will part purchase some of the items, particularly fencing, seeds and some labour to help him with this investment, which he needs now his income from his piggery has gone.
