Personal message

I have been appointed as the new director at Mamelani Projects and I am very excited about this new dawn in the life of the organisation and my own. As part of me stepping into this new role I have challenged myself to climb 3 major peaks above Cape Town namely, Devil’s Peak, Table Mountain and Lion’s Head in one day.  My goal is to raise R50 000 for the training and skills development of youth transitioning from children’s homes, community champions in our health programme and people who form part of the Mamelani team. Mamelani works with people to increase their sense of agency and ability to improve their own lives. We work with young people coming out of state care through our Youth Development Programme and with women through our Community Health Programme.

Growing up on the Cape Flats, I spent a lot my time dodging bullets and had to find ways of steering away from gangsterism in all its forms. I didn’t think much of how growing up in Lotus River contributed toward the resilience I possess today. When I became an adult and everything from a youth worker to a social worker, these experiences became secondary to any ideas I had about development. My journey at Mamelani Projects for almost a decade has revealed something different. It has been about discovering my value, dusting off the medals that I thought were insignificant and allowing them to shine in ways that allow other people to see their value too. I have been very fortunate to have a community of supportive people who have walked alongside me and provided me with the opportunity to discover the contribution I want to make to this world. I am climbing these mountains as my commitment to leading change and to supporting the growth and development of those around me.
