Meet Frans Erasmus, a 10-year-old little man who was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy in November 2021. The news was a profound shock to his entire family, as Frans is the vibrant, special center of this close-knit unit.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy, caused by a mutation in the DMD gene, is a rare but impactful muscle disorder affecting approximately 1 in 3,500 male births globally.

Frans, like many others with DMD, faces a challenging journey with symptoms that typically begin around the age of 6. The condition, which primarily affects those assigned male at birth, results in progressive muscle weakness and atrophy. By the teenage years, most individuals affected require a wheelchair.

Frans is a remarkable soul who, despite the frustrations and challenges of living with DMD, always finds the silver lining. However, his weakened arm muscles necessitate an electric wheelchair for improved mobility. The ideal wheelchair, designed to grow with him, starts at R18,000.00 and goes up.
