GOBI 2011 – Training Diary HIGHLIGHTS02 May 2011 – 8 Weeks to go
- After racing the Two Ocean Ultra Marathon (56 Km) the previous week in 3h59 I took it easy for a few days before I started my specific 8-week program for the Gobi.
- Did 30 Kms with 8 kg bag in Groenkloof on 30/04 to start my program. Tried new Bio Anabolic gels today. Good science, but too thick. I’m going to stick to my current gels.
- The following 4 weeks are meant to be tough and painful, containing long hours at a slow pace.
- Monday: 43 Km at Wally Hayward marathon on the road in 3h58. This 5:40/k pace hurts me badly. I do it on purpose to get used to running with hurting legs. I’ve recovered completely from Two Oceans.
- Tuesday: Easy recovery run for 1 Hour. Carrying no weight. Wednesday: Easy run for 1 hour again. Thursday: Rest Friday: Easy 10 km run with gym session.
- Saturday: 30.5 Km (2h55) with 8.5 kg bag in Groenkloof on technical route. I’m already 10 sec/k faster than last week. Sunday: 13 K recovery run.
Total training for week: 11h50 / 121 Km / 2 Long runs / One session with backpack
Health : Good Weight : 78 – 79 kg all week. I expect my weight to increase slightly as I now start burning more fat, but add muscle weight because of running with the bag. Logistics : Final payment for entry done. Air tickets paid for.
Logistics : Mandatory form handed in this week.
With all the above in mind---- or should i say in body, i am seriously wondering why any sane person would wish to punish themselves this way.
Dirk has chosen to support the needs of African kids in the hope that they too can fulfil their dreams.
