Sharon and Jan are excited and appreciative of the opportunity to represent CURVES at the Absa Cape Epic aka “The Magical and Untamed African MTB Race”, this year covering 685km and climbing a total of 16560m ( twice the height of Everest ). The race which is over 8 days, begins in Cape Town with a prologue climbing up Table Mountain. The next seven days cover a route which includes Gordon's Bay, Villiersdorp, Greyton, Grabouw and finishes at Lourensford in Somerset West. 

We are the only Womens’ Masters ( 50 plus) Team to be accepted. There will be a total of 10 women only teams, 93 mixed and 498 mens’ teams.

The period leading up to the event has been filled with many hours of preparation and as we only have 1 week left now, we are hoping that we have  put in enough to make the last 10 months of training, tears and exhaustion, all worthwhile. We have been training using the Polar heart-rate programme, putting in between 15 and 20 hours a week. Sometimes we panic wildly as we are not sure if we have done enough, but everyone keeps warning us not to over-train. I guess we'll only know after Saturday 28 March as we collapse over the finish line.

Jan, as owner, and Sharon, as manager, of a Curves Club have both been made so aware of the whole “Curves experience” of caring for, supporting and encouraging women. Seeing the change in women has been the main focus behind this Epic attempt. We encounter, many times, women who have to deal with enormous obstacles like losing very large amounts of kilograms or having bad medical problems to overcome. They sometimes believe that we cannot relate to their problems and this is our way of putting ourselves in a similar vulnerable situation with a goal which seems insurmountable. We want to prove that with the right support anything is possible if you really try hard enough. It has been such a rewarding experience to be on the other side and we can now truly live and ride by the Curves motto of “strengthening women”. For more info on Curves go to www.curves.com
