Personal message

I've gained so much in my short and relatively slow running career that it now seems appropriate to give back. I've also gained great joy in adopting two beloved Golden Retrievers - one of the breeds that make a difference in many lives thanks to the great work being done by the SA Guide Dog Association. I can only imagine the joy that these dogs bring to those in need of a service dog.

It takes up to eighteen months to train a service dog, but thanks to generous donations from all over South Africa, Guide Dogs are available to any person regardless of their financial position. The visually impaired person pays R100.00 towards their board and lodging for a 2 week stay at our training residence and R5.00 to purchase the dog. This is only made possible through fundraising. In fact, the true cost of a Guide Dog is R80,000. I'm hoping to make in a dent in that number for someone.

I'll be running the Two Oceans Half Marathon in aid of this very worthy cause.

Charity Default Logo

Since 1953, South African Guide-Dogs Association for the Blind (GDA) has strived to expand its offerings to the differently-abled community of Southern Africa, extending beyond Guide Dogs to include Service Dogs for people who are physically impaired, Autism Support Dogs for children with autism, and the College of Orientation & Mobility, whose Orientation & Mobility (O&M) practitioners teach people who are visually impaired to continue their lives in a safe and efficient manner and how to use a long cane as a mobility aid.
