Our challenge
From the 4th - 8th August (next week!) we will be cycling 300 kilometres through the game reserves of Botswana, Zimbabwe and South Africa. The cycle tour is organised by Wilderness Safari's for their charity called Children in the Wilderness.
A word about the charity
Children in the Wilderness is an environmental and life skills educational programme that focuses on the next generation of rural decision makers. It is one of the few programmes aimed at bridging the divide that exists between communities and wildlife.
Children in the Wilderness hosts vulnerable, rural children that live alongside the Parks and Reserves and teaches them the importance of conservation . The Children in the Wilderness programme aims to develop environmental leaders who are inspired to care for their heritage so that they become the custodians of these areas in the future. Children in the Wilderness exposes children to their wildlife heritage, builds and strengthens their capabilities to cope with life's challenges and educates them with the life skills necessary to actualise their greatest potential.
Picture us on day 1
An early start on the first morning. We will ride through the beautiful Northern Tuli Game Reserve on ancient elephant paths which also now serve as single track. The terrain varies from undulating savannah to rocky outcrops and wooded floodplains with a few technical stages and some good wildlife habitat. Today will provide a great opportunity to enjoy the landscape and hopefully get some good wildlife sightings. Due to the high abundance of wildlife on this reserve, we need to exercise caution when cycling on this day and cyclists will be expected to cycle within their groups. Cycling leaders will cycle with each group and ensure that groups stay together. Most of the cycling on this day will be on single track.
A portion of the ride will be spent traversing the Mmamagwa Ruins on Mashatu Game Reserve, a culturally significant site that pre-dated the Mapungubwe Dynasty and Great Zimbabwe. The day will end on the south western periphery of the Northern Tuli Game Reserve at the private camp of the Rothschild family.
Donations and sponsorships
If you are willing and able to support this cause, donations and sponsorships will be much appreciated. The organisation has an 18a tax status so anyone sponsoring or donating more than R1000 can be issued with a tax certificate on request.
Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to donate. All proceeds raised will go directly to Children in the Wilderness – we have paid our own entry fee for the Tour and our own travel costs for getting to and from the event.
We appreciated your support!
