For most of you who may not know, my best friend Zane Conroy had an injury on Australia Day 26th January. As a result of his broken neck injury, he went into surgery on the 27th January which lasted for 6 and a half hours. Although the surgery went well, the surgeons had to fuse Zane's vertebrae C2 to C7.
The doctors will have more information regarding the full extent of his injuries in the next 4 weeks once the swelling goes down. While we are hopeful of best-case scenario it appears that Zane will spend 6 months in hospital with a further 6 months in rehabilitation. Currently he is out of ICU which is fantastic however we still aren't sure if he will be able to walk again.
We have already raised funds to get his mom over to Aus to see him, however Zane still has bills to pay and as a result of the accident Zane will more than likely land up in a bit of financial trouble.
So I've decided to keep a log of each and every km I cycle from now until Zane is working again, whether he is walking again or not and I am looking for people and corporates to sponsor Zane and I for each km I ride, no matter how small the donation every km counts! Once we know more about how much rehab he will have every day I plan on training alongside him and one day riding together, even if I have to tow him behind be!
Two groups have been started on facebook by some of Zane’s friends. Just do a search for Zane Conroy, we have started a fund in Aus and are opening a SA bank account soon, we will also add some detail about me riding for him to the group soon. Once I have the details I will let you know. I have already done my first race since the accident and sent my medal with Zane’s mom to Aus. Please let me know if you would like to be a part of this journey with us and I will keep you updated!
