It’s been a while since our Cardno EMR retreat in Namibia, held in early March 2012, and what a wonderful time we had there together!  At the suggestion of Jean Francois, following the retreat we thought it would be fitting that in the spirit of hospitality and exchange that we should support a local organization which resonates well with Cardno’s ODA values, community engagement and sustainability, such as ‘Child in the Wilderness’. 

Children in the Wilderness is an environmental and life skills educational program that focuses on the next generation of rural decision makers. The program hosts rural children from underprivileged backgrounds that live alongside Namibia's Parks and Reserves and teaches them the importance of conservation.  Children in the Wilderness exposes children to their wildlife heritage, builds and strengthens their capabilities to cope with life's challenges and educates them with the life skills necessary to reach their greatest potential.

The program serves children between the ages of 8 and 16, hosted in groups ranging from 16 – 45 participants at a time, for periods of up to 6 days at Wilderness Safaris Camps. The well-structured curriculum is offered in a safe wilderness environment where nature becomes the teacher and the healer.  Children are offered a wide variety of educational activities in an age-appropriate and fun way with topics including: the geology and geography of the region; the area's wildlife and its conservation; arts and crafts; theatre; nutrition, sport, health and HIV/AIDS. Morning or afternoon game drives are an essential part of each day and often in the evening enjoyable wildlife and educational videos are screened.

Cardno EMR finds this program to share many of the same values and objectives of our development assistance programs worldwide, and several particularly in Africa.   Our collective EMR fundraising goal is NAM$ 10,000 (approximately US$1400).
