Meet Brody van Der Schyff, a 2-year-old who has encountered considerable hurdles from the start. Brody has spent over 70% of his life in the hospital battling recurring life-threatening bacterial infections. He has also undergone several significant surgeries related to C.H.A.R.G.E Syndrome, Horseshoe kidneys, and Type II Caudal regression syndrome.

He was born prematurely at 35 weeks with Choanal Atresia, Horseshoe kidneys, multiple congenital abnormalities, hydronephrosis, and Vesicoureteral reflux GR. IV (Kidney reflux). Just three days after birth, he was hospitalized due to Neonatal Sepsis, Jaundice, and Meningitis.

After undergoing several surgeries to preserve his kidney, he faced kidney failure and had his left kidney removed at 18 months in Dec 2022.

In July 2023, he spent 17 days in the hospital, where they discovered he had a cyst on his right deformed kidney. After a thorough investigation doing VCUG scans and MRIs, he was diagnosed with Spina Bifida and a Neurogenic Bladder. He no longer had control of his bladder or bowel.

In September 2023, he underwent two spinal surgeries within a week to remove a spinal tumor and untether his spinal cord. Due to complications, he spent 19 days in PICU.

On top of everything his little body has endured in the past two years, he has been suffering from countless recurring skin infections caused by various skin conditions leading to inflammation and continuous itching, leaving him in perpetual discomfort. We have visited multiple dermatologists and allergy specialists, but nothing they try seems to alleviate the discomfort he was experiencing.

In December 2023, we took him back to the allergy specialist, where we were told that Brody is unresponsive to conventional treatment and requires a highly specialized treatment that will remarkably improve his condition and quality of life. However, the cost of the treatment is R25,000.00 per month. Unfortunately, Brody is only on a Hospital Plan and the plan does not cover any of the treatments.

Despite facing many challenges in his young life, Brody van Der Schyff continues to inspire those around him with his resilience and boundless spirit. With a smile that lights up the room and a heart full of courage, Brody reminds us all of the power of strength and positivity in the face of adversity.
