The arrival of Summer heralds a tidal surge of flies seeking to enter homes. You could lock up your home and close every door, window, nook and cranny, but that's no way to live, is it?
What is the next best option? Spray a lot of horrible chemicals you can't even pronounce on your fly-infested house? Spend your days slapping them away with a damp tea towel or the newspaper from this morning?
We don't believe so. We've got better things to do with our time (like go to the beach...) than chase the little buggers around the house with a spray can, wet tea towel, or newspaper, and we believe you do too... Try these natural, inexpensive, and simple options to say good-by to those bothersome little critters before they dare to put a wing in your window.
Flies hate the fragrance of basil. Put a few basil plants in your kitchen and watch them vanish. Plus, the basil serves as a handy garnish, so it's a win-win situation, right?
Cloves - The fragrance of cloves repels flies. Place a dish of dried cloves in each area where you have fly issues, and watch them go! Despite its efficiency, this is not a suitable option if you loathe the scent of cloves, since you will most likely disappear from the room as well.
Plant mint, lavender, and marigold in your yard and put pots about the home to dissuade them from entering your property before they even get to the front door!
Cinnamon - flies hate the fragrance of cinnamon, so use it as an air freshener!
Essential oils of lavender, eucalyptus, peppermint, and lemongrass - Spraying these oils throughout the home will not only produce a lovely scent, but they will also keep those pesky flies away.
Flies are attracted to the fragrance of apples and vinegar. In a dish, combine apple cider vinegar and natural liquid soap to make a DIY trap. The scent will attract the flies, but they will be caught by the drift boss surface tension caused by the soap in the liquid solution.
Last but not least, keep the kitchen bench free and tidy at all times. Flies are naturally drawn to garbage and sliced fruits, so keep all bins hidden and cut fruits firmly covered or kept in the fridge. Then toss away the fly spray, wash your tea towels, recycle your newspaper, and go to the beach!
