Good day,

My name is Hentie Nortjé, and I live, work and play in the capital of South Africa, Pretoria, also known as Tshwane.

I am, amongst others, a PR Councillor for the Democratic Alliance in the City of Tshwane Metro. I am responsible for working in Ward 81, Tshwane in the Sunnyside area.

I recently encountered a feeding scheme for homeless and needy people in Sunnyside, driven by the AFM Church Sunnyside. This project immediately caught my attention, as I believe that one of the most devastating situations in which an individual can find themselves is to be hungry.

I came to the realisation that I could not turn a blind eye towards this wonderful project and therefore decided to swim my 24th consecutive Midmar Mile to raise money for the feeding scheme of AFM Church Sunnyside.

The Midmar Mile is taking place on the 10th and 11th of February 2024, and I will participate in this event on Saturday the 10th of February 2024.

One of the goals of AFM Church Sunnyside is to transform the lives of those who stay in Sunnyside and the surrounding area. The feeding scheme is only one way they tirelessly work to improve the residents' lives and contribute to the community's wellbeing.

They are distributing food all over Sunnyside, for instance, at the Sunnyside swimming pool. They are also handing out food from a container next to the church at the corner of Kotze and Troye Streets. They can feed from 150 to even 500 people on a given Friday.

The church does not receive any funds from the government for the feeding scheme, and they are relying on donations to continue every week with this applaudable project.

AFM Church Sunnyside - Feeding Scheme

Our assembly’s vision is to KNOW Jesus, Grow spiritually, SHARE: Souls must be saved and SPREAD: Transform our community. Transforming our community is an integral part of our vision. When you transform it, you better the circumstances of the individuals and their families, creating a better community and city for everyone. 

The most important is to get people to be saved and live a life that glorifies Jesus. But we would also like to contribute to their well-being by feeding the hungry. Every Friday, we have a feeding scheme on our premises, from the container where we feed between 150 and 500 less privileged people. 

We also travel far from our church, serving people on street corners. It sure makes a difference in their lives. Being a public benefit organization, we rely on donations. Feeding and serving this number of people surely costs a lot, and without the help of donations, it is not always possible to do as much as we desire. 

We have eight services in six languages on a Sunday, serving and changing about 2500 members' lives in our ever-changing, diverse city. We have activities for all these people during the week, involving them in creating a better community. Many of our members are students; therefore, they do not contribute much.
