Personal message
Hi, we are the BE MY HERO TEAM and we are taking part in some extreme events during the year as part of the ‘BE MY HERO’ project. We are teaming up with the South African Bone Marrow Registry to spread awareness about the wonderful potential of your blood. Please stay with me and hear me out.
So, here’s the thing…. You could be someone’s Hero by doing one of the following:
1. REGISTER AS A STEM CELL DONOR.
By registering as ‘n stem cell donor you could help someone with a life-threatening blood disease like Leukaemia or Lymphoma to survive. Many times, the only hope for patients is a matching donor. You could be that match. Look at the short story of little Ava that was one such patient: https://youtu.be/d_04DuYKGSg
To donate Stem Cells are almost like donating blood…Okay more like a few blood donations in a row but the wonderful part is that only stem cells are harvested and the rest of your blood goes back into your other arm! No such thing as putting a needle in your spine!! You do not have to be that brave, only between 16 and 45 years old, healthy and willing. Follow beautiful little Jade-Mari Ward’s story on her Facebook page. She received her transplant in June 2022 https://www.facebook.com/jademari.ward.3
2. DONATE BLOOD PLATELETS.
If you are not a suitable donor it doesn’t mean that you can’t help. Millions of people worldwide donate blood weekly but many people are not aware that they can donate Blood Platelets. Platelets are cell fragments essential for life in that they help blood clotting when blood vessels get damaged. Many cancer patients lose the ability to produce these platelets and is then dependant on donor platelets to avoid serious internal bleeding. Also, almost like Stem Cell donation the platelets are separated by a machine and your blood flows back to your other arm! Because you are healthy you will produce new platelets in no time! Blood platelets can be donated as much as 24 times per year, but even once will make a big difference.
3. SUPPORT
If you are not convinced to donate Stem Cells or Platelets then donate your husband’s or wife’s birthday money, you don’t know what to buy anyway so please sponsor us on our quest to save a little Ava. All donations will go to the ‘South African Bone Marrow Registry’ which is doing outstanding work to register as many as possible Stem Cell donors. This fund would be used among many other things to cover the costs of Laboratory tests and procuring test kits. Your contribution could help closing so many gaps.
We will undertake to do everything in our power to get to the finish line of each event. If it helps only one little Ava, it will be worth every step.
Please please please show your support by donating.
Please send a Whatsapp to 082 775 4654 with your choice and I will send you more information or I will help with the process or go visit the South African Bone Marrow Registry website on https://sabmr.co.za/

The South African Bone Marrow Registry

The South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR) exists to help find matching bone marrow donors for critically ill South African children and adults who need a transplant but do not have a match within their own family. The only one of its kind in South Africa, the SABMR is committed to helping every patient referred to it. If there is no matching donor in South Africa, we take our search worldwide - “We search the world to find your perfect match”.
