Arthritis Kids South Africa is a registered non-profit company supporting children with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA). JIA is a chronic musculoskeletal condition in children and studies indicate that between one and four children in 1 000 are affected by a form of this disease.

The aspiration of our organisation is that no child in South Africa suffers from preventable pain or disability caused by undiagnosed or untreated JIA.

In the Gauteng, there are two clinics that treat children with JIA – one at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital and one at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital. The paediatric rheumatologists operating these clinics see approximately 19 patients per week.

In response to increased pressure as a result of the pandemic, we have decided to extend our financial support of JIA families in need with a grocery voucher worth R250. Children on chronic medication do better if they have had a meal.

With this campaign, we intend to raise funds for 456 clinic visits over the next six months. Each family that comes to a JIA clinic will be given a voucher for R250. Children with this condition are often seen once every quarter, so some families will get vouchers twice. We therefore need to raise a total of R114 000.
