Ellerman House ArtAngels Initiative
ArtAngels is an annual charity art auction and party. Following the success of the inaugural 2011 event at CIRCA on Jellicoe in Johannesburg (R1.6m raised for charity, https://vimeo.com/34705297), Ellerman House, supported by the Everard Read Gallery, will be hosting a second event in Cape Town on 13 September 2012 in addition to the Johannesburg event on 15 November 2012.
This year, and going forward, ArtAngels will support the Click Foundation and its various implementation partners.
The Click Foundation is an educational skunkworks set up as a response to the education crisis in South Africa. Our aim is to innovate and test non-conventional, out of the box, technology based education solutions and programmes that have potential to scale and meaningfully impact education for individuals.
In January 2012, the Click Foundation began implementing a foundation phase English literacy program called Reading Eggs. Reading Eggs is an online, phonetics based program that uses reading games, activities, songs, animations and rewards to create a fun and motivational learning experience that supports the initial acquisition of literacy skills. Reading Eggs provides visual and auditory instruction that allows for individualised (i.e. 1 to 1 instruction) and self paced learning while requiring only basic facilitation.
To date, Click Foundation is partnering with 11 organisations, implementing in 13 environments (ranging from inner city after-school centres to rural schools), in 4 provinces and reaching approximately 650 children.
Given the success of the pilots and the demand of our implementation partners, the funds raised through the ArtAngels Initiative will be used by our partners to expand the reach of Reading Eggs in the current environments and other environments in which they operate.
ArtAngels Ellerman House will raise funds for our Western Cape partners, namely Ikamva Labantu (www.ikamva.org) and Inspire2Read which run various community literacy initiatives including at the Greater Stellenbosch Development Trust Ikhaya Trust Centre (www.ikhayatrust.org.za).

Statistics
Ikamva Labantu Charitable Trust

In the early 1960s, Helen Lieberman and other courageous activists responded to the unjust conditions of South African Apartheid by setting up survival initiatives in the Western Cape. In 1992, the coordination of these initiatives was formalised and Ikamva Labantu, meaning “Future of The People”, was launched as a non-governmental and non-profit organisation. Ikamva Labantu’s work focuses on early childhood development, the well-being of older persons and after-school initiatives that keep children safe and off the streets.
